Reading and Phonics

At Simonside, we endeavour to make reading an enjoyable experience for all children.  We want to encourage children to become enthusiastic, independent readers who leave school with a lifelong love of reading. Children are taught to read through shared and guided reading sessions which are structured to show progression.

We encourage children to take books home to read with their parents and children are encouraged to bring books in to share with their class.  Each classroom has their own selection of books for children to choose from.

The school uses various reading schemes and these are book banded for each level.  Floppy Phonics  and Songbirds are particularly used lower down the school and new reading books linked to the ‘Read Write Inc’ programme are used for the teaching of phonics.

At Simonside, we follow the systematic phonics programme published by the Government called ‘Letters and Sounds’ but also incorporate aspects of the ‘Read, Write, Inc’ scheme when teaching individual sounds and segmenting and blending skills.  Children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 participate in a daily phonics session.  These sessions involve not only the teaching of new skills, but the children are given time to practise and apply the skills they have been taught.  Children’s progress in phonics is tracked throughout each age phase.
