e-Safety Advice

At Simonside we go to great lengths to keep your child safe when using the Internet:

  • Internet use is always supervised by an adult,
  • Internet content is child-friendly and filtered for inappropriate content,
  • Internet use is monitored by the Local Authority,
  • We have the latest antivirus and firewall updates installed on all school computers.

We teach e-Safety across the school in Computing and Citizenship lessons. Messages are reinforced in special assemblies and through school displays. We promote the SMART Rules from Childnet which are:

Safe:
Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when you’re chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.

Meet:
Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time.

Accepting:
Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, images or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!

Reliable:
Someone online might lie about who they are and information on the internet may not be true. Always check information by looking at other websites, in books, or with someone who knows. If you like chatting online it’s best to only chat to your real world friends and family.

Tell:
Tell a parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone, or something, makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.

The Internet is always changing and keeping up to date with children's use of technology is challenging for many adults. It can be hard to supervise what young people are viewing and creating online, who they are chatting to and texting, and what they are downloading.

Many children may have better technical skills that you; however they still need advice and protection when using the Internet and mobile technologies.

If you would like more advice about keeping your child safe on the Internet these sites have been created especially for parents and carers:

Childnet
CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)
Common Sense Media

If you are concerned about actual or attempted online abuse you can report it here and the police will investigate: Make a Report

We run parents' e-Safety sessions in school but you are welcome to speak to your child's class teacher at any time if you have any concerns about keeping your child safe on the Internet.
